2. What is Old Faithful Geyser ?
Yellowstone National Park is located just above a gigantic magma chamber that formed 600,000 years ago. This “super-volcano” is still extremely active.
Rainwater seeps into cracks in the earth’s crust. As it moves deeper and deeper into the molten rock, it gets hotter and hotter and turns into steam. When the pressure becomes too high, the water suddenly gushes out of the depths of the earth through the geyser’s cone. Thus, it forms a column of water rising into the sky.
The geyser’s eruptions are said to be “predictable,” meaning that scientists have measured how often eruptions are likely to occur. For example, the geyser erupts about every hour, plus or minus 10 minutes. The eruption lasts a few minutes.
And since this phenomenon has been observed for at least 30 years, the geyser has been called Old Faithful.
3. Old faithful geyser’s eruption times
The first thing to do when arriving in the Upper Geyser Basin area is to go to the Visitors Center and find out about the projected eruption schedules.
Don’t do what we have done! 🙁 Because we were impatient to contemplate the geyser, we have headed straight to the observation stands. Then we have waited and waited… Rumors circulated in the benches around us, every visitors speculating on the time of the show.
Then after an hour, just as we were about to return to the Visitors Center for information, a fountain of boiling water began to rise in the air, first timidly then with all its strength, to form a beautiful liquid column. Here the famous geyser erupts again, superb spectacle for the eyes and the hears!
Finally, after this spectacular natural show, we came back to the Visitors Center. We checked the forecast eruption schedules of the other geysers located in Upper Geyser Basin.
